Prehypertension is a warning sign, indicating increased risk of developing high blood pressure in the future. It is defined as a systolic pressure from 120-139mm of mercury (mmHg) or a diastolic pressure from 80-89mmHg.
A normal BP level is less than 120/80mmHg.
Dr Sudha Desai, physician and intensivist with the Ruby Hall Clinic , said, “The prevalence of risk factors, such as excessive cholesterol, obesity and diabetes, is higher in individuals with prehypertension than in people with normal BP. There has been a surge in prehypertension cases in Pune due to the unhealthy lifestyle, lack of physical activity and poor eating habits.”
Dr Vikrant Khese, consultant cardiologist, Apollo Clinic, said, “We have recorded a 30% rise in patients with prehypertension at our hospital over the past 4-5 months. As of now, out of 10 teenagers visiting us with these symptoms, three are diagnosed with prehypertension as against 1 to 10 observed earlier.”
Experts said hypertension could exaggerate the symptoms of any infectious disease. The World Hypertension Day is observed on May 17. This year’s theme is ‘Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer’.
